We often hear that people around us have been diagnosed with a ‘slipped disc’ that arises due to factors like old age, strenuous physical activities, or an inactive lifestyle. Disc herniation, also known to us as slipped disc, mainly affects the lower back region and may be accompanied by risks and complications if not treated on time.

Understanding disc herniation:

Structurally, discs have two regions. A soft jelly-like portion is placed in the middle, and it is surrounded by a tough exterior. When the disc’s soft center protrudes, the hard exterior tears or herniates, resulting in disc herniation. Such a condition maycausenerve compression, subjecting an individual to extreme pain or discomfort.

What are the causes of disc herniation?

A disk herniation may occur because of the following reasons.
• As a person grows old, the discs gradually lose their protective cover, making the discs vulnerable to displacement from their original position.
• Lifting or carrying heavy weight may cause strain on the spine, causing displacement of the discs.
• Weak bones and an inactive lifestyle are some other reasons causing disk herniation.

What are the risks associated with disc herniation?

A person havinga slipped disc experiences pain and discomfort if the condition takes a complex form. The person suffers pain in the limbsand lower back region. Also, walking, sitting, or doing jobs that demand physical activities becomes challenging.

The compression of nerves due to the dislocation of the disc results in pain that gradually spreads to the lower back and legs. When the nerves get damaged severely due to compression, it weakens the muscles and may cause chronic pain due to permanent loss of sensation in certain areas of the body.

In some cases, the nerves present at the base of the spine, known as cauda equina, may get compressed. It is a complex condition that requires immediate medical help to avoid the occurrences of conditions like paralysis or dysfunctional bowel movements.

How to treat slip discs?

The first and foremost step is to visit a specialist to understand the complexity of the condition. Early detection and adequate medical assistance may help to avoid surgical interventions. However, adequate lifestyle management and physical therapies may help in improving the condition of disc herniation.
Thus, disc herniationimposesa challenge, and to overcome the condition proper diagnosis and monitoring is a must. It is essential to seek professional help to ensure that the condition does not take a complex form. However, with proper medicines, physical therapies, and lifestyle management, one can navigate the challenges and bring a positive shift in their lifestyle.
