Colloid cyst

A colloid cyst is one type of cyst thatemerges in the third ventricle of the brain. The third ventricle is a space that is centrally located inside the brain and is filled with fluid. These cysts are non-cancerous in nature. Studies reveal that colloid cysts occur rarely but they possess infinite power to affect an individual’s health.Due to their position, they often hinder the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) present in the brain.

Colloid cysts are asymptomatic in nature.Hence, they rarely show signs of their occurrence. However, certain symptoms are seen when they hinderthe regular flow of cerebrospinal fluid inside the cerebrum. Some common symptoms are-

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Cognitive changes
  • Loss of consciousness

Removal of colloid cyststakes place through endoscopic or microsurgical methods. Smaller cysts may not be extremely harmful so the doctors monitor them at periodic intervals before recommending surgery. However, bigger cysts, or the ones growing in size must be removed surgically to overcome the risk of a potential threatto an individual’s overall health.
