Intra medullary tumors

The spinal cord is an emerging point for a number of tumors that are mostly non-cancerous in nature. One such occurrence is the intramedullary tumors that have their origin in the spinal cord region. The growth of the tumor takes place from within the spinal cord and it leads to damage of white and grey matter. Intramedullary tumors specifically grow in the spinal cord and do not grow in any other adjacent areas of the spinal cord.

There are primarily three types of intramedullary tumors that can be classified based on their occurrence. They include-
- Ependymomas- Originates in the lining of ependymal cells, in the fluid-filled spaces of the central canal of the cord.
- Astrocytomas- Originates in the glial cells.
- Hemangioblastomas- The origin of this type of tumor can be attributed to Hippel-Lindau disease, which is a genetic disorder.
The symptoms of the occurrence of Intramedullary tumors include-
- Pain
- Weakness
- Sensory changesdisease, which is a genetic disorder.
- Coordination problem
The most common way of detecting the tumor is through MRI. The images help the healthcare specialists to determine the size, shape, area of occurrence and strength of the tumor. Surgical treatment methods for removing the tumor include chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of both as per requirement. The treatment plans are devised by neurosurgeons and a team of healthcare professionals to help the patients lead a healthy life.
