Intradural tumors

Tumors that occur inside the dura mater, the layer that protects the spinal cord are known as Intradural tumors. The growth of these tumors takes place inside or the area below the dura mater which is called subarachnoid space.

The place of origin of Intradural tumors is different types of tissues specifically inside the dura mater and they can be both cancerous or non-cancerous in nature. The different types of Intradural tumors include-

  • Meningiomas– They commonly occur as non-cancerous tumors, originate in the subarachnoid space, attached to the dura mater.
  • Schwannomas– Originates in the Schwann cells which are responsible for the cushioning of nerve fibers.

A number of neurological symptoms can be attributed to Intradural tumors. The symptoms include-

  • Headaches
  • Seizures
  • Sensory changes
  • Neurological Problems

The most commonly used technique for understanding the specification of intradural tumors is through MRI. The images obtained can help neurosurgeons study the tumor in detail and accordingly treat the condition to ensure effective outcomes. The methods of treatment and surgery vary from person to person, and doctors determine the course of action depending on the complexity of the condition.
